John is the founder, President & CEO of John W. Rafal & Associates, Inc. now known as Essex Financial Services, a Connecticut financial services firm with more than $2.1 billion in assets under management.
John has more than 30 years of experience in financial advisory services and has received numerous industry awards in the field of investment management. In 2002 and 2003, he was named as one of the Top 50 Financial Advisors in America by Registered Rep. Magazine. In 2003, he was listed as one of the “Top 30 Ranked Advisors in America” by Research Magazine. John was featured in the June 13, 2005 issue of Barron’s Magazine as one of “The Best 100 Financial Advisers” in the United States. He also received this honor in 2004, 2006, 2007 and 2008. John was recently named the #1 Independent Financial Advisor in the country by Barron’s Magazine. He is a member of the Connecticut and American Bar Associations, the Financial Planning Association and is a Registered Securities Principal.
John received a B.A. in political science from the University of Connecticut in 1971 and a J.D. from Temple University School of Law in 1975. John is a twenty year resident of Old Lyme, Connecticut. He is married to Dyanne M. Rafal. His son Matthew is a cum laude graduate of Northeastern University and is a successful rock musician (his band may be visited at www.thebrightwings.com). His daughter Alysia is a cum laude graduate of Princeton University. She is currently employed as the Associate Editor of InStyle Magazine.
John serves as a Board member of the Essex Savings Bank and the Middlesex Memorial Hospital, The Cove and The Eugene O’Neill Theatre Center, Inc. He is a past member of the Board of the Eastern Connecticut Symphony Orchestra.

Romaine A. Macomb, CFP

Romaine has 25 years of experience in financial and estate planning. Upon graduating from Southern Connecticut State University with a BS in Education, she obtained her Certified Financial Planning Designation from the College of Financial Planning in 1988. She is a member of the International Board of Standards and Practices for Certified Financial Planners, Inc. and the Financial Planning Association and is a Registered Securities Principal.
Romaine specializes in investment, retirement, estate, and pension planning. She is also the Director of our Pension / Profit Sharing and 401(k) Division and in that capacity supervises the investment of 310 corporate retirement plans. She was also featured in Plan Sponsor Magazine’s article on “the role of the planner in the pension marketplace.” In 2004, Romaine earned the Accredited Investment Fiduciary Professional designation, awarded by the Center for Fiduciary™ Studies, which is associated with University of Pittsburgh. Romaine has been a Financial Advisor with Essex Financial Services for twenty-two years. |
